About TS Chanakya Wetland
TS Chanakya Wetland is a 13-14 hectare tidal wetland located adjacent to the Indian Maritime University campus along Palm Beach Road in Nerul, Navi Mumbai. Surrounded by mangroves and connected to Thane Creek, it serves as a critical roosting and feeding site for migratory birds on the Central Asian Flyway. The wetland is particularly notable for hosting large flocks of lesser and greater flamingos from November to May, alongside diverse waders and resident waterbirds.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect to observe large congregations of lesser and greater flamingos, especially during high tide when birds move from the creek to shallower waters. The site features tidal mudflats, mangrove forests, and shallow pools that support diverse birdlife including painted storks, sandpipers, plovers, and egrets. Birdwatching is the primary activity, with guided walks often available. Access may be informal or restricted due to ongoing conservation disputes and construction pressures in the surrounding area.
