History of Town Gate
The Town Gate was built by the Danish in the 17th century, around 1660, as the landward gate (Landporten) of the fortified settlement of Tranquebar, established after the Danish East India Company acquired the area in 1620 and built Fort Dansborg. It served as the main controlled entrance through the town walls and ramparts that enclosed the Danish colony, regulating access from the inland side.
Culture & Context
The gate is a prominent surviving symbol of Danish colonial heritage on the Coromandel Coast and forms part of the Tharangambadi heritage ensemble that includes Fort Dansborg, Zion Church and other colonial-era buildings. It represents the town's layered Tamil and Danish cultural history and is a focal point for heritage walks.
