About Tosa Maidan
Tosa Maidan is a large high-altitude alpine meadow located in Khag Tehsil of Budgam District, Jammu and Kashmir, about 56 kilometres west of Srinagar. Situated at around 3,000 metres elevation and surrounded by dense pine forests and the Pir Panjal range, it is one of the largest meadows in the region. Formerly used as a firing range, it is now known for its expansive grasslands, seasonal wildflowers and panoramic mountain views.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a vast open grassland surrounded by pine forests and snow-capped Pir Panjal peaks. The meadow is largely undeveloped with rolling green pastures, seasonal streams and wildflowers in summer. There are no permanent structures inside the meadow; visitors explore on foot or on pony, with opportunities for walking, photography and picnicking. Access is via a hilly road from Khag, and the area is typically visited as a day trip with local guides and pony services available near the entry point.

History of Tosa Maidan
Tosa Maidan was leased as an artillery firing range in 1964 and used for that purpose until the lease ended in 2014. After 2014 the meadow was opened for civilian and tourism use. The area has long served as a traditional grazing ground and trekking corridor in the Pir Panjal region.
Culture & Context
The meadow is traditionally used as summer grazing land by local pastoral communities including Gujjar and Bakarwal herders. It is part of the cultural landscape of Budgam's highland pastures and is valued for its pastoral and natural heritage.
