History of Tomb of Muhammad Ghaus
The tomb was built in the 16th century in memory of Muhammad Ghaus (c. 1500-1562), a prominent Sufi saint of the Shattari order who settled in Gwalior. He is noted for assisting Mughal emperor Babur in capturing Gwalior Fort and for being the spiritual teacher of Tansen. The structure exhibits early Mughal architectural style developed during Akbar's reign and is noted for its stone lattice work.
Culture & Context
The tomb is revered as the shrine of a respected Sufi saint and is culturally significant for its association with Tansen, one of India's most celebrated classical musicians. The combined complex of Muhammad Ghaus and Tansen is a site of musical pilgrimage, especially during the annual Tansen Music Festival held in Gwalior.
