About Tomb of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb
The Tomb of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb is located in Khuldabad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, Maharashtra, within the dargah complex of Sufi saint Sheikh Zainuddin Shirazi. Constructed in 1707, it contrasts with other Mughal tombs due to its extreme simplicity, featuring an unmarked open-air grave covered with soil and herbs as per the emperor's wishes. The site also houses graves of Asaf Jah I and Azam Shah.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect to see a remarkably simple red sandstone platform with a central cavity filled with soil and growing herbs, rather than a grand mausoleum. The tomb is situated in the southeastern corner of the active Dargah of Sheikh Zainuddin Shirazi. A marble screen added by Lord Curzon surrounds the grave, and a marble plate bearing Aurangzeb's name is placed at one corner. Visitors must remove footwear before entering the sacred precinct.
