History of Toa Payoh Dragon Playground
Built in 1979 by the Housing & Development Board as part of its series of mosaic and terrazzo playgrounds. Designed by Khor Ean Ghee, it represents the HDB's 1970s approach to creating distinctive, locally-themed play spaces for public housing estates. It is one of only two dragon playgrounds left from that era, the other being at Ang Mo Kio, and is recognized as a heritage landmark.
Culture & Context
Widely regarded as an icon of Singapore's public housing heritage and collective childhood memory. The dragon motif reflects cultural symbolism and the era's playground design identity. It is a popular subject for heritage tours, photography and community nostalgia, representing the shared social history of Toa Payoh, Singapore's second oldest satellite town.
