History of Thiruvambady Sri Krishna Temple
The idol of Krishna was originally the Parthasarathy idol from a temple at Edakkalathur, about 15 km from Thrissur. Approximately four to five centuries ago, due to threats to life and property from communal conflict, villagers secretly carried the idol to Thrissur and entrusted it to a Namboodiri couple at Kachanappilly Illam. A small sala temple was subsequently erected for the deity.
Culture & Context
The temple is one of the two principal participants in the Thrissur Pooram, the largest temple festival in Kerala. The Madathilvaravu procession from Thiruvambady to Vadakkumnathan Temple is a highlight of the Pooram celebrations. The goddess Bhadrakali here is considered the younger sister of Paramekkavu Bagavathi.
