History of Thikkodi Lighthouse
The lighthouse was constructed between 1906-1909 and commissioned on October 20, 1909, by the British to warn mariners about the dangerous submerged Velliyamkallu (Sacrifice Rock) located about 10 km off the shore. It was built following a shipwreck, and remnants of the vessel can still be seen in the area. The original optical equipment was supplied by M/s. Chance Bros. of Birmingham.
