History of The Ridge
Originally known as Upper Bazaar, The Ridge was the main housing and market district before British administration. After a major fire in 1876, it was reconstructed exclusively for European settlers during the British Raj. Large underground water tanks built in the 1880s without cement still supply water to Shimla. The area has served as the venue for government functions and public ceremonies since the colonial era.
Culture & Context
The Ridge is the primary venue for Shimla's cultural activities and festivals, most notably the Summer Festival held in April or May. It houses significant colonial heritage structures and statues honoring key Indian political figures, making it a symbolic center of both historical memory and contemporary civic life in Himachal Pradesh.
