About The Kangaroo Sanctuary
The Kangaroo Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary located on Ilparpa Road, about 10 km south of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Founded in 2005 by Chris Barns as the Baby Kangaroo Rescue Centre, it rescues, rehabilitates and cares for orphaned and injured kangaroos. Made famous by the BBC documentary Kangaroo Dundee, it operates guided sunset tours offering close encounters with resident kangaroos in a natural bush setting.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a guided sunset tour only, accessible by advance booking with no general public walk-in access. The sanctuary is set in central Australian bushland with open enclosures and natural habitat. Visitors are led by guides through kangaroo enclosures, meet resident kangaroos including hand-raised orphans, hear rescue stories and conservation information, and experience kangaroos feeding and moving freely at sunset. Photography is permitted and tours conclude after dark.
