History of Thangassery Lighthouse
The Thangassery Lighthouse was established in 1902 by the British to guide fishermen and sailors navigating the reef-riddled coastal waters. An earlier oil lamp column was raised at this site during the mid-19th century. The tower underwent strengthening in 1940 due to cracks that had developed, and its lighting equipment has been upgraded several times since commissioning.
