History of Tham Krasae Cave
The cave is associated with the Thailand-Burma Railway (Death Railway) constructed in 1942-1943 during World War II. The adjacent wooden viaduct and railway line were built using Allied prisoner-of-war labour under Japanese direction. The cave served as a shelter and resting place for labourers during construction and today forms part of the preserved heritage corridor of the railway.
Culture & Context
The cave functions as a Buddhist shrine housing a large seated Buddha image venerated by local devotees and visitors. It reflects the Thai tradition of cave temples (tham) used for worship and merit-making, set in a scenic riverside location that combines religious and natural heritage.
