The fort is traditionally associated with a Teli zamindar and later controlled by successive powers including Pala and Sena rulers, the Bengal Sultanate, the Mughals and the British. It gained prominence during the 16th century when Sher Shah Suri defeated Humayun near the pass in 1538, and later when Raja Man Singh, general of Emperor Akbar, fortified the area during Mughal campaigns in Bengal and Bihar.
Culture & Context
The fort is locally recognized as a historic landmark marking the cultural and geographic gateway to Bengal and is associated with regional folklore about the Teli community. The pass remains a notable heritage site for the Santhal Pargana region.
