Telaga Sarangan

Telaga Sarangan is a natural mountain lake located in Sarangan village, Plaosan District, Magetan Regency, East Java, on the eastern slope of Mount Lawu at about 1,200 meters above sea level. Covering approximately 30 hectares with a depth of around 28 meters, it is the largest natural lake in the area. Surrounded by pine forests and hills, it is a well-established tourist destination known for boating, cool climate, and scenic views.

Visitors can expect a large natural lake surrounded by pine-covered hills and cool mountain air on the slopes of Mount Lawu. A paved lakeside promenade circles part of the lake with views of the water, forested slopes, and Mount Lawu. Boats including rowboats and speedboats are available on the lake, horse riding is offered along the lakeside, and numerous food stalls, souvenir shops, and hotels line the perimeter. The area is developed for sightseeing, photography, and leisurely walks.

Telaga Sarangan is a natural lake formed by volcanic activity of Mount Lawu. Local folklore associates its origin with the story of Kyai Pasir and Nyai Pasir, farmers who discovered the basin that became the lake. It has long been a settlement and rest area on the slopes of Mount Lawu and developed as a tourism site during the Dutch colonial period.

The lake is culturally significant for the local community and is the site of the annual Larung Sesaji or Labuh Sesaji ceremony held on Friday Pon in the Javanese month of Ruwah. Offerings are floated on the lake as an expression of gratitude and prayer for safety and prosperity, attracting visitors and participants.
