History of Talbot
Originally known as Back Creek, Talbot developed rapidly after gold was discovered in 1852 during the Victorian gold rush. It was renamed Talbot in the late 1850s and became a significant goldfields service town with banks, hotels, churches and government buildings. Many structures from the 1860s-1870s survive, reflecting the prosperity of the gold mining era and the subsequent decline as alluvial gold diminished.

Talbot represents a characteristic Victorian goldfields town with intact colonial architecture and streetscape. It is valued for its heritage character, community-run farmers market which has become a regional cultural event, and its role in preserving Central Goldfields history through the local museum and heritage collections.
