History of Talab-e-Shahi
The lake and adjacent Khanpur Mahal were constructed in 1617 AD as a shooting lodge and pleasure residence for Prince Khurram (later Emperor Shah Jahan). After Shah Jahan's demise, the local royal family of Dholpur maintained the palace. The site represents early Mughal garden-palace architecture predating Shalimar Bagh.
Culture & Context
Talab-e-Shahi holds cultural significance as one of the earliest Mughal garden-palace complexes in India. The lake serves as an important habitat for winter migratory birds and reflects the Mughal tradition of creating artificial water bodies for royal hunting retreats.
