History of Surfers Paradise
Originally known as Elston, the area was subdivided for tourism in the 1920s. Hotelier Jim Cavill opened the Surfers Paradise Hotel in 1925 and successfully lobbied to rename the area Surfers Paradise in 1933. Post-World War II development, high-rise construction from the 1950s-1960s, and promotion as a surf and holiday destination established it as the centre of Gold Coast tourism.
