History of Surajkund Ancient Reservoir
Built in the 10th century CE by Raja Suraj Pal of the Tomara dynasty, who ruled the Delhi region. The reservoir was constructed to harvest rainwater in the Aravalli hills and was dedicated to the Sun God Surya, from which it derives its name Surajkund (Lake of the Sun). It is an early example of water management architecture with a semicircular embankment and is protected as an important historic structure.

The reservoir lends its name and cultural identity to the area and is closely linked to the annual Surajkund International Crafts Mela held on the adjacent grounds, which showcases crafts, handlooms and cultural performances from across India and other countries.
