About Sungai Wain Protection Forest
Sungai Wain Protection Forest is a 9,782-hectare protected lowland forest located in Balikpapan Utara, Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, Borneo. Managed by the Balikpapan City Government, it serves as the city's main water catchment and biodiversity reserve. Established in the Dutch colonial period, it is notable for its dipterocarp forest and as a habitat for endangered Bornean orangutans, sun bears, and diverse bird species, with controlled ecotourism access.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a managed lowland tropical rainforest with dense dipterocarp trees, natural trails and a designated ecotourism zone near the entrance at Karang Joang. Access is with a mandatory local guide. Visitors can walk forest trails, observe wildlife such as orangutans, sun bears, gibbons and hornbills from a distance, visit an information centre and small interpretation facilities, and experience a quiet, natural environment focused on conservation and education rather than mass tourism infrastructure.
