History of Sun Theatre
Opened on 18 November 1938 as a single-screen Art Deco picture palace seating over 1,000 patrons, designed in the interwar functionalist style. It operated until the early 1960s when it closed due to the rise of television, then served various uses including retail. Saved from demolition and extensively restored and subdivided into a multi-screen cinema in the mid-1990s, reopening in 1995. It is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register for its architectural and social significance as a rare intact suburban cinema.
