About Sumur Sand Dunes
Sumur Sand Dunes are a stretch of cold desert dunes located near Sumur village in Nubra Valley, Leh district, Ladakh. Situated along the Shyok River at an altitude of around 3,000 metres and backed by the Karakoram Range, the dunes form part of the high-altitude desert landscape of Nubra. The site is known for its white sandy expanses, Bactrian camel safaris and stark contrast between desert, river and snow-capped mountains.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect expansive white and silver sand dunes set in a wide valley floor flanked by the Karakoram mountains and the Shyok River. The landscape is arid and open with sparse vegetation. Visitors can walk on the dunes, view the surrounding mountains and river, and take Bactrian double-humped camel rides offered by local operators. The area is quieter than Hunder dunes on the opposite side of the valley and offers photography opportunities and views of nearby Samstanling Monastery.
