History of Sulangan Church
The parish in Sulangan was established to serve the southern coastal communities of Guiuan and is dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua. The church gained prominence as a shrine due to devotion to its image of the saint. The structure was heavily damaged by Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) on November 8, 2013, which devastated Guiuan as its first landfall area. The church was subsequently reconstructed and restored with assistance from church and community donors, and continues to serve as a symbol of recovery in the area.
Culture & Context
The church is one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in Eastern Samar, drawing devotees who seek intercession from St. Anthony of Padua. It plays a central role in local religious life, especially during the annual fiesta on June 13 in honor of St. Anthony, when pilgrims, novenas, and processions are held. The shrine reflects the strong Catholic faith and devotional traditions of the Guiuan community.
