About Styx Tall Trees Conservation Area
The Styx Tall Trees Conservation Area is a protected forest reserve in the Styx Valley near Maydena in Tasmania's Derwent Valley, about 90 kilometres north-west of Hobart. It conserves one of the world's tallest flowering tree species, Eucalyptus regnans (mountain ash), including specimens over 80 metres tall. The reserve features a short rainforest walk through towering eucalypts with a dense understory of myrtle, sassafras and tree ferns, showcasing old-growth temperate forest.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a short, tranquil forest setting dominated by giant Eucalyptus regnans towering above a cool temperate rainforest understory of myrtle beech, sassafras, musk and tree ferns. A well-marked 1.2 km loop walk with boardwalk sections leads through the forest to viewing points for the tallest trees, including the Chapel Tree. The area is quiet and natural with no built attractions beyond the walking track, car park, picnic tables and interpretive signs.
