Founded in 1839 by Dr William Rankine and his brother James Rankine with Scottish settlers, Strathalbyn was laid out on the Angas River and developed as an agricultural and pastoral service town. Many buildings from the 1840s to 1860s survive, reflecting Scottish settlement, early flour milling, and 19th-century rural development in South Australia.
