History of St Kilda Pier
First constructed as a timber jetty in 1853 to serve early settlement and later extended in stages. The distinctive St Kilda Pavilion, an Edwardian kiosk built in 1904, is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. The pier has been rebuilt and restored several times, including major reconstruction in the 1970s and recent renewal works, and remains one of Melbourne's oldest and most iconic piers.
Culture & Context
An iconic Melbourne landmark and long-standing recreational destination for locals and visitors. Known for its association with beach culture, community fishing, and as the home of a resident colony of little penguins (Eudyptula minor) on the breakwater, which is managed for conservation and public viewing and has become a significant wildlife attraction within an urban setting.
