History of St. John's Cathedral
The cathedral traces its origins to 1930 when Rev. Fr. Abraham OIC offered the first Holy Mass on September 12, 1930. The reunion of Archbishop Mar Ivanios Metropolitan with the Catholic Church occurred on September 20, 1930, marking a milestone in Malankara Catholic history. After the erection of the Tiruvalla diocese in 1932, the chapel was upgraded to St. John's Cathedral. A third church was constructed in 1943, and Bishop Mar Athanasios invited Laurie Baker to design a new cathedral following Second Vatican Council principles. This structure was blessed on December 28, 1972. The current cathedral was consecrated in September 2004 after the previous building faced structural issues.
