History of Soundararaja Perumal Temple
The temple has ancient origins praised in hymns by Tirumangai Azhwar (7th-9th century) and is classified as a Divya Desam. Existing structure shows layers from Medieval Cholas with later contributions from Vijayanagara and Thanjavur Nayaks, evidenced by inscriptions, mandapas and gopuram additions. It has served as an important Vaishnavite centre on the Coromandel coast for over a millennium.
