History of Sonar Gouranga Temple
Sonar Gouranga Temple is historically significant for enshrining the deity of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu believed to have been worshipped by his wife Vishnupriya Devi after he took sannyasa in the early 16th century. The original golden-hued brass image is traditionally dated to that period, while the present temple structure was developed later to preserve and house the deity. It represents the Gaudiya Vaishnava heritage of Nabadwip, the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

The temple is a major cultural and religious centre for Gaudiya Vaishnavism. It is revered as a place where devotees can have darshan of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in his golden form (Gauranga). It plays a central role during festivals such as Gaura Purnima, Kartik Vrata and Nabadwip Dham Parikrama, when pilgrims from across India visit to offer prayers, chant and participate in devotional gatherings.
