About Sonajhuri Khoai
Sonajhuri Khoai is a distinctive laterite badland landscape on the outskirts of Santiniketan in Birbhum district, West Bengal. Characterized by wind and water-eroded gullies and ravines interspersed with Sonajhuri (Acacia auriculiformis) forest, it lies near the Kopai River. The area is notable for its unique geology, its association with Rabindranath Tagore's Santiniketan, and the popular weekly Sonajhuri Haat that showcases local handicrafts and tribal culture.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect an open landscape of reddish laterite gullies and small canyons formed by erosion, shaded by tall Sonajhuri trees. The area is largely natural and uneven, with forest trails and open clearings. On Saturdays and Sundays, the clearing hosts the Sonajhuri Haat, a vibrant open-air market with stalls selling handicrafts, textiles, dokra metalwork, and terracotta, accompanied by Baul singers and Santhal tribal dance performances. The site offers nature walks, photography, and cultural shopping in a rustic setting.

History of Sonajhuri Khoai
Khoai is a natural geological formation created by long-term wind and water erosion of laterite soil. The landscape was noted by Rabindranath Tagore and is closely associated with the cultural history of Santiniketan and Visva-Bharati, founded by Tagore in 1901. The Sonajhuri trees were planted as part of afforestation efforts to check erosion.
Culture & Context
The area is a cultural hub showcasing Birbhum's handicrafts and tribal heritage. The Sonajhuri Haat provides a platform for local artisans, Santhal tribal communities, and Baul musicians, reflecting the art, music and craft traditions nurtured by Santiniketan's ethos of art and rural life.
