History of Sivasagar Tank
Sivasagar Tank was excavated in 1734 under the orders of Queen Ambika, wife of Ahom King Swargadeo Siva Singha. It was constructed as a large water reservoir for the Ahom capital and exemplifies Ahom water management and town planning. The tank and its associated temples — Sivadol (1734), Vishnudol and Devidol — represent the architectural and engineering achievements of the Ahom dynasty that ruled Assam for nearly 600 years.
Culture & Context
The tank is a significant cultural and religious landmark for the region, with the three dol temples on its banks dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Durga. It remains a focal point for local gatherings, religious observances and festivals, and symbolizes the heritage of the Ahom kingdom and its capital Sivasagar.
