History of Sinquerim Beach
The beach is situated at the base of Fort Aguada, built by the Portuguese in 1612 to defend against Dutch and Maratha invasions. The lower fort section on the beach served as a safe berth for ships and a freshwater replenishment point for vessels arriving from Europe. A bastion known as Queen Maria extends into the sea and is connected to the main fort by an elevated causeway.
