History of Shri Varkana Parshwanath Jain Tirth
The temple has ancient origins with references suggesting it was once part of a large prosperous city called Varkanakpur or Varkanaknagar. An inscription on a nine-sided pillar dates to Vikram Samvat 1211, confirming the temple's antiquity. Another stone inscription outside the gate is dated Vikram Samvat 1686. During the reign of Maharana Kumbha in the 16th century, affluent Jain merchants from Srimalpur carried out renovations. The idol is believed to have been consecrated in Vikram Samvat 515. In VK 1981, renovation work was undertaken, followed by re-pratishta in VK 2014.
Culture & Context
The temple is one of the Godwal Panch Tirthi and is worshipped daily during pratikaman in the Sakal Tirth Stotra phrase 'Antriksh Varkano Paas'. Every year on Posh Krishna 10, a big fair is held at the temple. The site holds special significance as pilgrim tax was historically cancelled by Maharaj Jagat Singh of Mewad at the instance of Acharya Devsuriji Maharaj for four days during Posh Vadh 8 to 11.
