History of Shri Mahakal Lok
Shri Mahakal Lok was developed as part of the Mahakaleshwar Temple redevelopment plan to improve pilgrim infrastructure around the ancient Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Phase 1 of the corridor, covering about 900 metres, was inaugurated on 11 October 2022. The project restores the Rudrasagar Lake precinct and interprets stories from the Shiva Purana through sculptures and murals.
Culture & Context
The corridor is centered on Lord Shiva and the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, a major pilgrimage centre in Ujjain, one of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) and host of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela. Its sculptures, pillars and murals depict narratives from the Shiva Purana and Shaivite traditions, enhancing the religious and cultural experience for pilgrims and visitors.
