History of Shri Devaki Krishna Ravalnath Saunsthan
Originally enshrined on Chorao Island, the temple was destroyed by Portuguese missionaries in the early 16th century. Deities were secretly moved to Mayem in Bicholim and later reconsecrated in Marcel around 1560 to escape persecution during the Goan Inquisition. This migration reflects the resilience of Hindu devotees in preserving their faith under colonial rule.
Culture & Context
The temple is the kuladevata (family deity) of the Parrikar clan and holds special importance for the Saraswat community. It hosts unique traditions like Chikhalkala, where male devotees roll in mud reenacting Krishna's childhood pranks. Major festivals include Malni Purnima, Ramanavami, and Gokulastami, fostering communal bonding and cultural preservation.
