History of Sawarna Beach
Sawarna was historically a remote Sundanese fishing village on the isolated south coast of Banten. Road access improvements in the 2000s opened the area to domestic tourism, after which Sawarna Beach and its surrounding coves were developed as a community-based coastal tourism destination within Lebak Regency.
Culture & Context
The beach is part of a Sundanese coastal fishing community where traditional fishing, village homestays and local culinary traditions shape the visitor experience. The coastline is valued locally for its natural landscape and as a community livelihood area centered on fishing and tourism services.
