History of Saurabh Van Vihar
Saurabh Van Vihar was developed by the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department in the early 2000s as a memorial to Captain Saurabh Kalia, an Indian Army officer from Palampur who was killed during the 1999 Kargil War. Captain Kalia was born on 29 June 1976 in Palampur, studied at D.A.V. Public School and Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University, and was commissioned into the 4 Jat Regiment. On 15 May 1999, while leading a patrol at Bajrang Post in the Kargil sector, he and five soldiers were captured by Pakistani forces and subjected to torture before being killed. The park was severely damaged by floods around 2018-2020 and was subsequently restored and reopened for visitors.
Culture & Context
The park serves as a memorial honoring the sacrifice of Captain Saurabh Kalia and promotes environmental awareness through eco-tourism. It represents the intersection of military commemoration and nature conservation, inspiring visitors to value both national service and environmental protection.
