History of Sasthamkotta Lake
The lake is named after the ancient Sastha Temple, a pilgrimage center located on its bank. It was designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention in November 2002. The Kerala State Government prepared a Conservation and Management Action Plan in 1999 for sustainable utilization.
Culture & Context
The lake holds deep spiritual significance due to the presence of the historic Sastha Temple dedicated to Lord Ayyappa (Dharma Sastha) and Lord Ganesha. The temple festival concludes with Araattu, a ceremonial holy dip. The lake is deeply woven into Kerala's spiritual traditions and serves as a major source of livelihood and cultural heritage for local communities.
