History of Sanjay Gandhi National Park
The park contains the Kanheri Caves, which served as a Buddhist monastic university and rest stop for traders from the 1st century BCE to the 10th century CE. Inscriptions reference Satavahana and Traikutaka dynasties. The area was declared a national park in 1983, previously known as Borivali National Park, and renamed in honor of Sanjay Gandhi.
Culture & Context
Kanheri Caves represent a major center of Buddhist learning and art in western India, featuring chaityas, viharas, and inscriptions in Brahmi and Pali scripts. The site reflects ancient trade routes and religious patronage. The park also holds cultural value as Mumbai's primary ecological sanctuary and recreational space for millions of urban residents.
