History of San Sebastian Cathedral
The first church on the site was built by Augustinian missionaries in 1605 when Lipa was established as a settlement. The present masonry structure was constructed under Augustinian Recollect Fr. Benito Varas starting in 1865 and completed in 1887. It became a cathedral in 1910 with the creation of the Diocese of Lipa. The building was damaged during World War II and subsequently restored and renovated, retaining its Romanesque character.

The cathedral is the spiritual center of the Archdiocese of Lipa, which covers Batangas province, and is dedicated to Saint Sebastian, the patron saint of Lipa City. It hosts major liturgical celebrations, city fiestas, and religious processions and is a focal point for Catholic devotion and community gatherings in Lipa.
