History of Sampeng Lane Market
Sampeng was established after King Rama I founded Bangkok in 1782 and relocated the Chinese community from the Grand Palace area to the Sampheng area south of Wat Sam Pluem. Soi Wanit 1 became the main commercial street of the Chinese settlement and developed into Bangkok's earliest and most important wholesale trading center, retaining its role for over 200 years.
Culture & Context
The market is the commercial heart of Bangkok's Chinatown and a center of Thai-Chinese trading culture. It reflects the long-standing entrepreneurial heritage of the Chinese-Thai community and remains a key wholesale source for retailers across Thailand for accessories, textiles and festive goods.
