History of Samayapuram Mariamman Temple
The temple's origin is linked to an earlier shrine at Kannanoor; according to tradition the Mariamman idol was moved to Samayapuram. The present structure is attributed to the Vijayanagara period and later expansions under the Nayaks of Thanjavur in the 17th-18th centuries. It has long been associated with protection from smallpox and other ailments in local belief.
