History of Rutherglen Wineries
Viticulture began in Rutherglen in the 1850s following the gold rush, with early pioneers including Lindsay Brown and the Morris, Campbell and Stanton families. The region became a major wine producer by the 1880s and survived phylloxera and economic changes to become famous for fortified wines. Many wineries retain original 19th-century cellars, barrels and winemaking equipment reflecting more than 160 years of continuous winemaking.
Culture & Context
Rutherglen is recognised as one of Australia's oldest and most distinctive wine regions, with a protected Muscat classification system and strong family winemaking traditions. The wineries form a central part of local community identity and agritourism, celebrated through events such as Winery Walkabout and Tastes of Rutherglen.
