About Rushikulya Turtle Nesting Beach
Rushikulya Turtle Nesting Beach is a sandy coastal stretch at the mouth of the Rushikulya River in Ganjam District, Odisha. It is one of India's major mass-nesting sites (rookeries) for Olive Ridley sea turtles, alongside Gahirmatha. The beach extends for several kilometres near Purunabandha village, about 160 km from Bhubaneswar, and is notable for the annual arribada when thousands of turtles nest together.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a long, open sandy beach at the Rushikulya river mouth with dunes, fishing villages and a relatively undeveloped coastline. During nesting season (February to April), large numbers of Olive Ridley turtles come ashore to nest, and hatchlings emerge weeks later, viewable only from designated areas with forest department permission. Outside nesting season, the beach is quiet for sightseeing, photography, birdwatching and walks along the shoreline. There are no shacks or water sports facilities.
