History of Rohtasgarh Fort
Traditionally associated with Rohitashva, son of King Harishchandra. The present fortifications are largely attributed to Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century who used it as a strategic stronghold, and later to Raja Man Singh, the governor of Bengal under Akbar, who made additions including palaces and temples. It served as an important military and administrative centre in eastern India.
Culture & Context
The fort complex reflects a blend of Hindu and Afghan-Islamic architecture with temples, mosques and palaces within the same enclosure. The Rohtasan Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva remains a place of reverence for local visitors, illustrating the site's long-standing religious and cultural importance.
