History of Robe Obelisk
Built in 1855 by the South Australian Government as a day beacon and navigation aid to guide ships into the anchorage at Guichen Bay during Robe's peak as a major port. Constructed of local limestone and standing about 12 metres high, it was painted with red and white stripes for visibility. It replaced earlier beacons and is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. The structure is now threatened by ongoing coastal erosion of the Cape Dombey cliffs.
