History of Riverway
Riverway was developed as a major riverfront revitalisation project initiated by the former Thuringowa City Council and continued by Townsville City Council after amalgamation in 2008. Stage one, including the lagoons, arts centre, library and parklands, opened in July 2006. The project transformed former riverfront land along the Ross River into a planned community, cultural and recreational precinct for the growing Upper Ross area.
Culture & Context
Riverway functions as a key community and cultural hub for Townsville, hosting art exhibitions, theatre performances, film screenings, markets and community festivals at Riverway Arts Centre and the Village precinct. The library and arts facilities provide cultural and educational services for the Thuringowa and greater Townsville community.
