History of Rewari Railway Heritage Museum
The shed was built in 1893 to maintain steam locomotives on the Rajputana-Malwa Railway. After steam traction was phased out in the 1990s, it was the only steam loco shed retained in India. It was refurbished and reopened as a heritage museum in 2002 by Indian Railways. It preserves locomotives dating from 1855 to the 1960s, including the Fairy Queen (1855), listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest working steam locomotive.
Culture & Context
The museum is a significant centre for railway heritage conservation in India, showcasing the evolution of steam technology and the role of railways in India's transport history. It serves as an educational and cultural attraction for railway enthusiasts and preserves industrial heritage for future generations.
