History of Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park
The park was created in 2006 by the Mehrangarh Museum Trust to restore the natural ecology of rocky wasteland adjacent to Mehrangarh Fort. It was opened to the public in February 2011. The Visitors Centre is housed in Singhoria Pol, a restored 17th-century gateway into Jodhpur city that had fallen into ruins. The historic city wall was also restored as part of the conservation effort.
Culture & Context
Named after Rao Jodha, the 15th-century Marwar ruler who founded Jodhpur and established Mehrangarh Fort. The park represents an important ecological restoration project preserving the natural heritage of the Thar Desert region. It demonstrates sustainable conservation methods while providing educational opportunities about desert ecosystems.
