History of Rankala Lake
Originally a black stone quarry before the 8th century, the site transformed into a lake following earthquakes between 800-900 AD. It was further developed and structured by Maharaja Shri Shahu Chhatrapati. The lake is historically linked to legends involving Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and contains the ancient Rankabhairav Temple site.
Culture & Context
The lake holds religious importance due to the Nandi shrine, where local belief holds that Lord Shiva moves the Nandi one grain of wheat daily towards the water; apocalypse is prophesied if he reaches the lake. It has also been a significant filming location for Marathi and Hindi cinema, notably associated with V. Shantaram's ShantKiran Studio.
