History of Ram Bagh
Ram Bagh was built in 1528 by Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire, as Bagh-e-Gul Afshan (Garden of Flowers). It is considered the earliest Mughal garden in India and served as a model for later Mughal charbagh gardens. It was later renamed Bagh-e-Nur Afshan and Aram Bagh (Garden of Rest) and was used by subsequent Mughal emperors including Humayun and Jahangir. The garden is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Culture & Context
The garden represents the introduction of Persian charbagh garden traditions to India, reflecting Mughal concepts of paradise gardens with symmetry, water channels and pavilions. It holds cultural value as a historic leisure retreat and an early example of Mughal landscape architecture that influenced later gardens in Agra and across India.
